What is CBT?
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or CBT for short. What is it?
The C in CBT is ‘Cognition’ Which means ‘Thinking’ and the B is the ‘Behaviour’ or what we do as a result of what we think about. Finally the T is ‘Therapy’ Which is another term for Counselling.
CBT Therapy is a very focused, structured type of counselling, which focuses very much on the ‘Here and Now’ or the ‘Present Moment’
The emphasis tends to be on the ‘thoughts’ and the ‘behaviour’ in equal measures. The good news is … it works! It’s tried and tested!
Research shows that CBT is the most effective way of turning problems around, and quickly.
Person Centred Counselling by contrast is more of a casual style of approach, and you can talk about whatever you wish to talk about, and that is fine for some people. If that is what you want, I’m a qualified Person Centred Counsellor too. However; We have to acknowledge that you can spend the counselling hour talking about whatever you wish in counselling, and you are of course in charge of what you share and when, and how.
The CBT approach is structured so that you become focused also, and you will want to make good headway regarding your own problem as much as I do.
